Let's visit Thann

In a preserved and natural environment at the entrance to the Thur Valley, Thann owes its fame to the Collegiate Church Saint-Thiébaut, a jewel of Gothic art in Alsace, noteworthy for its openwork spire and its magnificent three tympanum door.

An historic town...

Dominated by the ruins of the Engelbourg Castle better known as « the Witch's Eye », Thann is the start of the famous Alsace Wine Route; the Rangen vineyard which once impressed Michel de Montaigne who stopped in Thann during a trip to Italy in 1580, is now classified in its entirety as Grand Cru and produces a wine of great renown.

The « Tour des Sorcières » (the Witches' Tower), a tower from the ancient town fortifications, is now home to a museum detailing different local vineyards and wine-production techniques

The old Corn Exchange dating from 1519 houses a museum devoted to local art and history.

Endowed with a strong cultural tradition...

As a cultural town with plenty of tourist attractions, many activities are organized throughout the year.

  • The « Burning of Three Fir Trees » is a half religious, half secular celebration. On June 30th each year, it commemorates the legend of Saint Thiebaut and the origins of the town.
  • « L'œuf en habit de fête », the international exhibition of painted Easter eggs takes place on the third Sunday before Easter in the Relais Culturel of Thann. It's the biggest painted egg market in Alsace.
  • « Vins et Saveurs des Terroirs » does justice to the Alsatian gastronomic tradition and also to wines from other regions. It is held at Place Modeste Zussy during August.
  • « La grande Braderie », the traditional annual bazar, is organized by the Thann Shopkeepers Association and takes place on the second Wednesday of September thus carrying on a tradition which began in 1659.
  • Throughout the month of December, « Le Marché de Noël » (the Christmas market) recreates the magic of Christmas in a unique setting around the Collegiate Church. There are many activities such as exhibitions, concerts and traditionally there is a theatrical performance by the Bâtisseurs company at the Church square.
